Please take the following information into account when ordering Tulu fabrics.

1. Tulu fabrics are hand-printed or hand-woven.  Slight variations in printing, color, hand are hallmarks of the craft and are not considered defects.  We recommend backing fabrics for all uses.

2. Dry clean recommended or hand wash and lay flat to dry.

3. Blockprinted fabrics are available in three bases: linen/cotton (which we call linen for short), adras (silk/cotton), silk khadi (hand spun, hand woven silk), and velvet (cotton).

 

Linen/cotton:
             *** PLEASE SEE CHART FOR WIDTHS OF INDIVIDUAL FABRICS
             Most undyed ground fabrics: 59” wide
             Dyed ground fabrics, Laszlo: 55” wide, approximately. (Can be 55” up to 58”.)
             Melvin and Lu-Si designs: 49.5” approximately. (Can be 49” to 50”)

Adras:  Silk and cotton.  Not recommended for upholstery.  Appropriate for decorative pillows, curtains, slipcovers, etc. Width: 43 1/3"/110cm

Silk Khadi: Hand-spun, hand-woven silk. Not recommended for upholstery. Appropriate for decorative pillows, curtains. Width: 35 2/5"/90cm

Velvet: Cotton velvet. Recommended for upholstery, decorative pillows and curtains.Width: 57"/145cm

 

4. Important information about ikat

Ikats are hand tied, dyed, and woven silk/cotton. Ikats are sold as three narrow ikat panels hemmed together to form a full-width fabric.

*** Ikat patterns DO NOT align or match. Our ikats are panelled with three lengths seamed together at the selvedges.  Ikat showroom wings show this panelling. Ikat’s motifs are repeated in reverse image about every 2m- there is a blurred white line approximately every 2M- this is the repeat line- where the pattern repeats and reverses itself-this is not an imperfection but a characteristic found in all traditionaly woven ikats. It is therefore almost mathematically impossible to match any “repeat” across the panels. It is also traditional to panel ikats as the lengths lay. .***  

It is important that our showrooms and clients know and understand all of these details before ordering ikats. Please be in touch with any questions.

 

5. Piece Sizes

Minimum order is 2 yards. Orders less than 2 yards require a 25$ cut fee.

If a requested piece size is not available, a reprint can take four weeks or more.  Please note desired piece size with your stock check! And keep in mind there is little or no printing possible during monsoon season, approximately June-September.

Maximum piece size is either 6 yards or 9 3/4 yards, depending on if the design is hand blocked or hand screened.  (See chart, below.)

 

6. Special Order Fabrics

Tulu stocks most of its offered fabric bases, and can print other bases on a special-order basis.

We also offer a bleached white linen/cotton base.

**** If the special order fabric is not in stock, there are minimum orders- depending on print technique..  Printing can take 4-6 weeks. ***
